About Ann’s Memoir
Ann Haskin was born in a three-room shack in the backwoods of Alabama. Her father died when she was two. Her mother was abusive and neglectful, leaving the hungry children to fend for themselves as they searched for food. This continued until the children were rescued by the police and escorted to their aunt’s cotton farm. There, they picked cotton all day in the hot, humid sun.
Shortly thereafter, the children were returned to their mother who, after moving a stranger into the house, fled to California with him and the children. They would watch in horror as this man would beat their mother, at times leaving her for dead.
Ann’s life demonstrates the power of God, which transformed a shattered childhood into a life of purpose and meaning. This is a story of hope, faith, and forgiveness and how she found joy and peace in His promises.
Mary PMay 6, 2023Ten Lost Children: A Story of Redemption: Even in the worst of times, God is always there, loving & caring for His children. This book was a "can't put it down" type of book. It has been several years since I read a book that has touched me so deeply. I knew this family, but never realized the horrors these children had suffered. This book is written with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and shines its Light through the darkest times in the life of these children. The author cried out to God at a young age and although she did not always serve Him best, she knew that He was close by. When she fully surrendered to God, He paved the way for this awesome book. I will be loaning my book out to others who can benefit from the testimony of this Godly woman. Thank you Ann (Hazel) Haskin for your inspiring words and the work you do in obedience to God.
Patty SwinfordMay 6, 2023Ten Lost Children: A Story of Redemption: God is always working even in the suffering I finished "Ten Lost Children" by Ann Haskin today. The LORD God orchestrated a miraculous story of His Grace working in the life of Ms. Haskin and gave her the perseverance to commit this love story to paper. What a blessing for us readers to receive the encouragement and faith this story bring.The first few chapters of "Ten Lost Children" were not easy to read. The author's sweet nature, humility and genuineness came through well, but the horror she and her siblings endured day after day were not easily overshadowed. Although she did not describe in gory details, her writing skills paint a picture that will break your heart.I was anxious and ready to get to the part where the little "Hazel" was seeing God's hands in the darkness. The LORD opened her spiritual eyes to recognize His Grace at a young age, and even though the abuse didn't stop for years, I believe He was letting her know this book was already in the works; her testimony was forming to be spread to many loveless children, families, people, so that they could know the God of Love. Ms. Haskin has transformed a bare, empty, hard tale of poverty into a beautiful song of God's Redemption.Nothing happened overnight but everything happened for God's glory and continues to happen with the publishing of this book. Please read it, pray about sharing the book with someone who needs to see God's mercy and grace moving throughout a lifetime.I highly recommend this book.Symphony playerMay 4, 2023Ten Lost Children: A Story of Redemption: Touching book is poignant I liked that the author's story has an element of hope throughout, despite the harsh living conditions she and her siblings experienced. She was the baby in the family that had 10 children. From childhood, she gravitated toward faith as a way out of hunger, violence and poverty. She clung to faith and strove to be a good person, although she writes, too, about her own failures, such as the time her sister talked her into stealing a candy bar and she suffered from guilt afterward. The older children had to go to work early and even Haskin writes that she had to drop out of school because of falling behind. As a student, she fell asleep in class from fatigue. The violent night episodes from her mother and stepfather often kept the children awake all night. She was hungry at school until she and her siblings went on the free lunch program, and she was bullied there because of her tattered clothing. I felt hopeful, though, because the tone of the book is hopeful. This book gave me a new understanding for forgiveness! To experience the horrible things as a child and to grow up with so much forgiveness and Grace. What the devil meant for bad, God meant for good. It’s so worth reading and truly seeing another side of growing up! Those of us who had wonderful parents and loving home life have no idea how some others live or are taken care of (lack of care) Ann did a fabulous job and being so honest and sharing her story. SO WORTH it to read this. I couldn’t put this book down! Compelling story of the power of forgiveness and redemption! When we see others, we often have no clue what they are going through. After I started reading, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one day. I had no idea of the hardships my cousins endured growing up because they were in California most of the time and my family lived in Alabama. Some of the revelations were horrifying, but I don’t want to spoil the book for other readers, so I’ll just leave it at that. It is an entertaining and well-written book. Y’all this book right here…. It truly blessed my heart. Please get it and read it. I knew so many people in this book while I was growing up in Ballplay. These were my neighbors and some were friends of my Mama and Daddy that lived on Tom Cat Road. The stories are tragic but Ohhh what our Lord can do to heal our brokenness.
